Edinburgh Trams Project, Scottish Water major utility infrastructure diversions

From 2008 to 2013, the Deise Engineering project manager oversaw the utility diversion aspects of the Edinburgh Trams project, valued at £780 million, for client (Scottish Water) as part of the City of Edinburgh Council’s integrated transport network development. This complex and highly specialised undertaking was on an ageing network in a world heritage city centre and was one of Scotland’s largest ever infrastructure projects.

The remit included directing Scottish Water’s construction works, including their engineers and consultants working on water and waste water diversions and new infrastructure works.

The project manager controlled interfaces with designers, clients, and construction PMs and identified issues within the project team in order to drive up performance from the team to meet challenges associated with an increase in works activities and project change. Our project manager input and accepted changes to design and drawings for construction issues and responded to design and technical queries and request for information.

Successfully minimising the client’s risk and cost exposure, the project manager monitored progress against programme; ensured time and cost programmes were met and safely delivered the project on time, to budget, and to a high standard. As the interface with the commercial team, we provided monthly updates on costs and progress.

The project manager represented the client at weekly/monthly meetings and solved project delivery issues, including the handover, construction issues, and health and safety. Responsibilities included chairing meetings with the client, contractors, and designers relating to project issues; compiling weekly/monthly project management and PM reports; and registering, controlling, and monitoring documentation.

The project manager controlled the supervision and monitoring of construction works, including site quality control and new infrastructure diversions in order to ensure quality workmanship, compliance with health and safety and all client specifications and standards, and that all testing requirements had been completed and certified.

The Deise Engineering project manager continually received positive feedback from the client and contractor and successfully improved site records and site quality monitoring. Part of this involved developing and instituting a spreadsheet-based system to record and report daily onsite quality issues.
